Superior Grill has been rated consistently as one of Louisiana’s best Mexican restaurants since 1983 when our first establishment opened in Shreveport. Our New Orleans location opened in 1997 and has become a landmark in fine quality foods with a festive Mexican atmosphere.
Superior’s authentic Tex-Mex food is made from scratch every day with only the freshest ingredients. Our tortillas are hand-rolled with care all day long. For added flavor, all of our meats are cooked over a mesquite grill. We are proud of what we make and how we prepare it.
An extensive menu ensures that everyone can find something satisfying at Superior Grill. Start with one of our famous margaritas – made with freshly squeezed lime juice – and then try our other favorites, from sizzling fajitas and cheesy nachos to stuffed burritos and juicy steaks. Superior Grill is great for weekends too: stop in on Saturdays and Sundays between 11am and 3pm for our brunch menu.
Superior Grill is “the place to be” for happy hour, birthdays, office parties, and large groups. In addition to our festive indoor dining room, we offer a memorable outdoor dining experience on our landscaped patio featuring beautiful flowers and one of the best views of St. Charles Avenue. We also host several events throughout the year. Find out more here.
Poncho Cuellar is the Executive Chef at Superior Bar and Grill in New Orleans on beautiful St. Charles Avenue. Poncho was born in Austin, Texas and lived there while his father was working on his master’s degree in business administration. Moving back to Mexico after his father finished his studies, Poncho grew up in border towns and cities like Juarez, Mexico and Eagle Pass, Texas.
Poncho’s cooking is influenced by the cooking of both countries, from the authentic dishes of northern Mexican taquerias (mole, menudo, and carne asada), to the Tex-Mex style of San Antonio and Houston (enchiladas, chile con queso, fajitas, and quesadillas).
In 1987, Poncho decided to move from Eagle Pass to Houston, landing his first real restaurant job as a dishwasher and pizza-maker at Bombolino’s, a new Italian concept by Mama Ninfa’s. Moving quickly up the ladder, Poncho became a manager for one of the units and decided that the restaurant industry would be his life. With the help of a good friend, an investor of the Ninfa’s corporation, and an SBA loan, Poncho became a Bambolino’s franchisee at the age of twenty-one.
After a few years of operation, the Ninfa’s corporation decided that it would shut down the Bambolino’s brand and turn them into “Ninfa’s Mexican Cafes.” Poncho again became a Ninfa’s franchisee.
After a couple of successful years, Poncho sold the restaurant to a group of investors and went back to Mexico. After a month in Mexico he was offered the position of chef and kitchen manager at Ninfa’s Mexican Restaurant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After operating Ninfa’s kitchen from 1994 to 1999, Poncho was asked to take over total kitchen operations of Superior Bar and Grill in New Orleans; an offer he couldn’t refuse. Poncho knew this was “the job” when he was given the green light to do whatever it took to make Superior Grill the best Mexican restaurant in the city and in state of Louisiana.
Implementing the influences of the regions where he grew up, Poncho mixes the best of both worlds in his menus. Taqueria-style pork and brisket tacos and ceviche are served alongside Tex-Mex favorites like fajitas, burritos, puff tacos, and a variety of seafood items.
As Executive Chef Manuel “Poncho” Cuellar would say, “Mi casa es su casa, come and enjoy fabulous Mexican Dining y Margaritas Famosas.”
